Article 20 explained in plain English
First: prescription conditions:
- Only one medicine per prescription.
- An original with “Restricted Substance” written at the top in red, and two copies marked “Not dispensable”.
- The original is kept at the pharmacy, the patient is given a copy, and the other is kept in the prescription book.
- Ink that cannot be erased, and no crossings-out or alterations.
Second: mandatory data: the establishment's name and address; the patient's four-part name, age, sex and nationality; his file number and ID; the prescription's number and date; the diagnosis; the scientific name of the medicine, its form, the dose and the duration of treatment in figures and words; the physician's name, work card number and signature; the name of the pharmacist responsible for custody, his card number and signature; the Ministry of Health's instructions; and the establishment's seal.
Third: validity from the date of issue:
- One day in emergency cases.
- Seven days for clinic patients and those discharged from hospital.
Fourth: the Minister of Health, in coordination with the Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, may amend the conditions, the data and the validity period, and the Ministry, in coordination with the Authority, verifies any modern prescription-writing technology before approving its use.
In practical terms for the patient, a prescription that is incomplete, altered or expired does not meet these conditions. Anyone with a problem concerning these prescriptions can consult a lawyer specialized in health and commercial cases.
Practical example
Sarah leaves a hospital in Riyadh with a prescription for a restricted painkiller. The prescription is valid for seven days from the date it is issued, so if she goes to the pharmacy after ten days, the prescription has expired.
