Article 125 explained in plain English
Air accidents do not recognize borders; an aircraft may disappear near a neighboring State's border or over shared waters. This article therefore regulates international cooperation in search and rescue.
- Power to propose: The Authority may propose the arrangements needed for coordination and cooperation with other States on search and rescue.
- Priority: The article names the States neighboring the Kingdom in particular.
- Approval: The arrangements reached must be submitted to the board of directors for approval. The Authority proposes and negotiates, but approval is for the board.
The article does not specify the form or content of these arrangements; they might include exchanging information, sharing areas of responsibility or mutual assistance, depending on what is agreed.
This article follows Article 124, which requires the competent authorities to allow, immediately and temporarily, the entry of the persons, equipment and aircraft the Authority considers necessary for search and rescue operations; advance arrangements with neighboring States make this kind of participation easier. It is followed by Article 126, which prohibits removing parts of the accident aircraft or distorting its traces except for necessity or with the Authority's approval. This article is organizational and addresses official bodies mainly.
