Article 3 of the Saudi Enlisted Personnel Service Law

This article sets out the ladder of military ranks for enlisted personnel, which are seven ranks as stated in the text (English equivalents are given for convenience):

1. Private (jundi).
2. Private first class (jundi awwal).
3. Lance corporal ('areef).
4. Corporal (wakeel raqeeb).
5. Sergeant (raqeeb).
6. Staff sergeant (raqeeb awwal).
7. Sergeant major (ra'ees ruqaba').

Paragraph (b) provides that the word "technical" is added directly after the rank for technical enlisted personnel, so one says, for example, “technical lance corporal”. Under Article 2, a technical enlisted person is any enlisted person who performs special work requiring technical specialization or skill as set by the Implementing Regulations.

This order agrees with the definitions in Article 2: the private is the lowest military rank, and the noncommissioned officer is one whose rank is above private first class and below officer. Knowing the rank is important in practice because many provisions of the Law, such as the basic salary set for the rank and grade in the salary scale, are tied to it.

Note that the text lists the ranks and adds the description "technical" without setting out in this article the conditions for moving from one rank to another, which are regulated by the promotion provisions of the Law.
